Twenty-five years ago today, The Next Generation aired its series finale. It was our first look at what the future might hold for Jean-Luc Picard, who’d retired to his family vineyard in France.
Today, Picard returns to the vineyard in the first teaser for his own series, Star Trek: Picard.
We imagine this will be a very different kind of Star Trek from the usual spacefaring fare. The voiceover narration suggests that, over the course of the ten years following The Next Generation, Picard was promoted to admiral — and then, following some personal tragedy, he retired. Fifteen years later, someone or something wants to better understand what happened. Will the show be told partly in flashbacks, similar to The Good Place, where we slowly piece together what has happened? Does this tie into the destruction of Romulus in the 2009 film? Similar to Mr. Holmes, will Picard come out of retirement for one more mission?
Nobody from TNG is listed among Picard‘s regular cast: Alison Pill, Michelle Hurd, Evan Evagora, Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera and Harry Treadaway. Guest appearances of familiar characters seem inevitable — but in reality, how often do you think of, let alone see, friends from 15–25 years ago? And yet, the teaser closes with hints of the TNG theme… possibly played on a Ressikan flute.
Picard debuts Fall 2019, sometime before the third season of Discovery. Stay tuned to Transporter Lock for more news and our reviews!
